Message from the Chairman

SET2019 Chair (United Kingdom)

On behalf of the World Society of Sustainable Energy Technologies (WSSET), I am looking forward to welcoming you to Kuala Lumpur for the SET 2019 Conference. Previous SET conferences were held in Portugal (Porto 2002), China (Chongqing, 2003), United Kingdom (Nottingham, 2004), China (Jinan, 2005), Italy (Vicenza, 2006), Chile (Santiago, 2007), South Korea (Seoul, 2008), Germany (Aachen, 2009), China (Shanghai, 2010), Turkey (Istanbul, 2011), Canada (Vancouver, 2012) , China (Hong Kong, 2013) , Switzerland (Geneva, 2014), United Kingdom (Nottingham, 2015), Singapore (2016), Italy (Bologna, 2017), and China (Wuhan, 2018).

The conference is organized by Universiti Sains Malaysia and the World Society of Sustainable Energy Technologies (WSSET).

SET is a multidisciplinary international conference on the sustainable energy sources and technologies, and will provide a forum for the exchange of latest technical information, the dissemination of the high-quality research results on the issues, the presentation of the new developments in the area of sustainable energy, and the debate and shaping of future directions and priorities for better environment, sustainable development and energy security.

This year’s conference includes a wide range of topics on sustainable technologies including energy, buildings, transport, and industry. We shall have lectures given by eminent keynote speakers and technical sessions focusing on important research topics related to sustainable technologies and eco-buildings

As you no doubt realize, climate-change threatens the water and food security of billions of people around the world. Wider application of sustainable technologies/eco-buildings is vital to achieving a sustainable economy, improved quality of life and protection of the environment.

I hope that you find the event informative and enjoyable.

SET2019 Chair (Malaysia)

On behalf of Universiti Sains Malaysia (USM), it is my great pleasure to welcome you to Kuala Lumpur for the SET2019 Conference. Since its inception in 2002, the SET conference has always been annually hosted by the collaboration between the World Society of Sustainable Energy Technologies (WSSET) and an academic institution. USM will be the co-host for the year 2019 and it will be the first time the SET conference will be setting its foot in Malaysia. SET2019 will be a momentous conference since it is in conjunction with the USM’s Golden Jubilee anniversary.

Kuala Lumpur is certainly the right place for SET2019, a multi-racial cosmopolitan city that provides opportunities for networking, socialising, exchanging culture, and shopping. The participants are expected to make the most of their time during their stay in Kuala Lumpur.

Energy security, right after water and food security, is the current global concern. Even though fossil fuel is still the major source of energy in today’s world, renewable and alternative energy should be sought out. The development of smart materials and systems that can reduce and recover energy should be encouraged. New and existing cities should be designed and tailored to be more energy efficient. All these efforts require good policies and governance so that they can be realised for the benefit of humankind. The SET conference sets the stage for these endeavors.

I welcome you to Malaysia and hope that you will enjoy the Malaysian hospitality!
